2nd Annual ``Premios Juventud'' Awards: a Night of Stars and Premier Performances
The stars came out to party for the second edition of Univision's(NYSE:UVN) "Premios Juventud" youth awards show which aired LIVE fromthe University of Miami at 8pm ET/PT (7pm CT/MT).
The first awards show on Spanish-language television thatcelebrates the preferences of this country's young Hispanics, "PremiosJuventud 2005" gave awards in 30 unconventional categories. Among thenight's biggest winners were Puerto Rican hit recording artist DaddyYankee, with five statuettes ("Catchiest Tune," "I Hear HimEverywhere," "My Favorite Concert," "Favorite Urban Artist" and "He'sGot Style"), and Colombian singer/songwriter Shakira, who alsoreceived five awards ("Best Moves," "I Hear Her Everywhere," "FavoritePop Artist," "Favorite Rock Artist," and "Best Duet"). Other multiplewinners included Mexican Pop sensation RBD ("I Hear Them Everywhere,""CD to Die For," "Best Ballad," and "My Idol Is...") and JenniferLopez ("She's Got Style" and "She Steals the Show"). In Sports, famousbaseball shortstop Alex Rodriguez ("Most Electrifying Guy Jock"), andMexican track and field phenom Ana Guevara ("Most Electrifying GalJock") each received statuettes.
Anticipation ran high at the show's start, as the identity of thehosts had been kept secret in the weeks leading up to the event.Following an exciting "race to the arena" sequence, surprise specialguest, recording megastar Enrique Iglesias was joined onstage by themystery hosts, Mexican novela superstars Jaime Camil and Kate delCastillo. Then, to the crowd's continued amazement, Puerto Ricanheartthrob Chayanne rose on a platform from the middle of the "fanpit" to debut his newest single "No Te Preocupes Por Mi" for the firsttime on U.S. television.
In what would be a night full of "firsts," Christian Castroperformed "Amor Eterno" for the first time and two groups, La 5aEstacion ("Algo Mas") and RBD ("Solo Quedate en Silencio"), made theirU.S. live television debut. Viewers witnessed the birth of a star asthis year's "Objetivo Fama" winner Anais performed for the first timein front of a live audience since winning the singing competition onUnivision's sister network TeleFutura. Later, in one of the evening'smost elaborate production numbers, reggaeton music producers Luney yTunes brought together five of the genre's biggest stars to appeartogether for the first time. Known for his dramatic entrances, DaddyYankee descended from the ceiling perched atop a cage containing alive tiger and joined Baby Ranks, Tonny Tun Tun, and Winsel y Yandelto perform the mega-hit "Mayor Que Yo." And in a dramatic grandfinale, Puerto Rican recording artist Olga Tanon was joined onstage by45 dancers for her first live television performance of her latest hit"Vete Vete."
Another highlight of the festivities was when the UnivisionNetwork's news anchor Jorge Ramos was joined by Latin music's reigningpop sensation Shakira to present three scholarships to deservingHispanic youngsters in the areas of Music, Sports and AcademicExcellence. And an emotional tribute was presented by TV's DonFrancisco as the special "Idol of Generations" award was given topopular comedian/writer/director Roberto Gomez Bolanos, "Chespirito,"for a lifetime of achievement.
Among the many Hispanic stars arriving to walk down the "PremiosJuventud" red carpet were: Pablo Montero, Frankie J, Sissi, Banda elRecodo, Lili Estefan, Raul de Molina, Jackie Guerrido and many more.Reggaeton duo Angel y Kris opened the "Red Carpet" event with apulsing performance from the Red Carpet Stage. The "Red Carpet"portion of the show aired one hour before the awards ceremony as aspecial titled "Noche de Estrellas" (Night of Stars).
